<hi style=afpcap>The B-52B was the first version of the Stratofortress to enter operational service, with the 93rd Bombardment Wing at Castle AFB, California being the first unit to equip with the type as that unit was the tasked with training aircraft. The 22nd BW at March AFB, California was one of the first units to operate the Stratofortress with a number of B-52Bs being assigned. The version saw service for several years before being retired in favour of later production versions which were more capable. Even in retirement the B-52B performed a useful role as a ready reserve and to be negotiated as such during various arms treaties with the Soviet Union.</hi>
